Diggin' up money on Dog Day 2008 July 23, 2008, 10:32 am
Working like a dog is nothing new to employees at Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group. And on Friday, June 20, they worked with their dogs – around 20 of them in three different branch offices - in observance of Take Your Dog to Work Day 2008. Nearly $500 in donations to the Virginia Beach SPCA was raised. VBSPCA’s Compassion Classroom speaker Sharon Haring, along with adoptable all-American mix Allistar, presented an adoption awareness program to Atlantic Bay employees (and pooches).

Cell Phones for Soldiers February 12, 2008, 2:16 pm
ATLANTIC BAY MORTGAGE GROUP AND CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS KICK OFF COLLECTION DRIVE IN CHESAPEAKE , NEWPORT NEWS
Chesapeake, Va., February 2008 – Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group and Cell Phones for Soldiers are calling on all Americans to donate cell phones and accessories to benefit our armed forces overseas. Cell Phones for Soldiers will turn the donations into prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops stationed overseas to use, keepingthem connected with their families back home.
Local residents can support the collection drive by donating cell phones of any make, model and condition (as well as accessories, chargers, batteries, PDAs and pagers) at any Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group location Monday thru Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m., including:
-118 Great Bridge Blvd., Chesapeake, VA23320
-2540 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA23452
-11715 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, VA23606
“Since June 2006, we’ve collected 570 cell phones from mostly folks in Virginia Beach,” says Gary Hudgins, Marketing Director of Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group. In 2007, he says, AtlanticBay sent six big boxes of cell phone donations in -- about 250 pounds worth of cell phone equipment. But the Virginia Beach-based company wants to increase the donations by making it easier for more of Hampton Roads to get involved, through their offices in Newport News and Chesapeake. “It’s not hard to imagine how much it means to a soldier overseas to be able to call his family back home,” Hudgins adds. “If you’ve got old cell phone stuff in your junk drawer, please bring it to us.”
Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the registered 501c3 non-profit organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas. Through increased fundraising efforts, the Bergquists hope to raise more than $9 million in the next five years to fund new programs, such as providing video phones and prepaid service to allow soldiers abroad to see their families on a regular basis.
The phones are sent to ReCellular, Inc., the world's largest recycler and reseller of used cellular phones and accessories. ReCellular pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each donated phone – enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad. Approximately half of the phones ReCellular processes are reconditioned and resold to wholesale companies in over 40 countries around the world. Phones and components that cannot be refurbished are dismantled and recycled to reclaim materials, including:
•Gold, silver and platinum from circuit boards
•Copper wiring from phone chargers
•Nickel, iron, cadmium and lead from battery packs
•Plastic from phone cases and accessories

Borrowers Get Year-End Gift from Fed December 11, 2007, 3:18 pm
The Federal Reserve lowered interest rates today for the third straight meeting of the FOMC. What does this mean? Well, if you're looking to capture the best home loan rates, you need to act now. For those with an application already in process, you should probably lock your rate as soon as possible. And, for anyone who has yet to begin a loan application, what are you waiting for?
Rate Hikes on the Horizon
Despite this latest cut from the Fed, rates for many borrowers could actually increase soon. Why? Because Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have recently announced 2008 Loan Level Price Adjustments (LLPAs) that are already starting to show up on lenders' rate sheets. LLPAs are automatic “penalties” based on credit scores, which tack on costs in the form of points or higher rates for most anyone with a FICO less than 720. Call me, and I will give you all the details.
Back to The Fed
But, let's get back to the good news. The Fed cut the Federal Funds Rate, an overnight lending rate that banks charge each other and which influences the amount of interest consumers pay for various types of debt, such as credit cards, home equity lines of credit, and auto loans.
Since September 18th, the Federal Funds Rate has gone down 100 basis points. If you have a loan that is tied to the Prime Rate, this means your rates have been lowered a full point. But, for those seeking to obtain new financing, you must act now to take advantage.
No Time to Wait
Following each of the last two interest rate cuts by the Fed, home loan rates jumped higher a couple of weeks later. Remember, lower short-term rates are inflationary by nature, and cause consumers to spend more money. Because of this, long-term rates tend to increase as bond holders hate inflation and command higher rates as a result in order to protect their investments.
Because of these pressures and the upcoming Loan Level Price Adjustments, interest rates are going to rise. You need to call me now in order to secure the best deal you may see for some time.
You'll be glad that you did.
We appreciate your business and wish you a happy and healthy holiday season!
